When you visit restaurants in Santa Barbara over Thanksgiving, you’ll find a wide variety of tempting food options. But how did the ideas for what we have come to know as the “traditional” Thanksgiving feast first start? Here are a few insights into how Thanksgiving dinner became the celebration of culinary pleasure we have come to know and love today:
- You might not recognize some of the foods that were likely served at the first Thanksgiving meal. The Pilgrims and Native Americans probably dined on a feast of what was readily available at the time. Staples like rabbit, chicken, venison, leeks, lobster, cabbage, eggs, radishes, and goat cheese may have all been on the menu. Do you think we should bring any of those items back for Thanksgiving dinner at Blush?
- Turkeys have existed in the United States and Mexico for a very long time. Evidence has been found that shows the Aztec Indians were raising turkeys as early as 200 B.C., while Native American Indians are known to have raised turkeys for food as far back as 1000 A.D. It is said that Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in America and we plan to help keep that status intact at our Thanksgiving dinner!
- Campbell’s Soup invented the now-famous green bean casserole about 50 years ago when it was creating recipes for a new cookbook, and trying to increase sales of its Cream of Mushroom soup. That one recipe has probably led to millions of dollars of sales for the company. - While the early settlers may have enjoyed cranberries, they probably did not have the sugar available to make cranberry sauce with them. Now fresh cranberry sauce often provides a delightful addition to the Thanksgiving plate. In fact, more than 94% of Thanksgiving dinners will include some type of cranberry sauce. Join us for Thanksgiving dinner and find out whether Chef Worrell is recreating his incredible orange-cranberry reduction from last year’s Thanksgiving menu.
- Potatoes were not part of the original Thanksgiving feast because they had not yet been introduced to North America. Times have changed and the tasty tubers are now grown in every state. Chances are we’re going to have some savory potato dish on our Thanksgiving dinner menu.
- Pumpkin is a fruit. See how we incorporate this fruit into our Thanksgiving dessert menu.
